on death

Yesterday was a tough one at the Lodge.
Its probably no surprise that people die there
and while it doesn't happen everyday
it is certainly within the realm of a 'normal' day at work.

Sometimes it comes quickly
taking everyone by surprise.
It pushes past flustered family members who wait frantically for elevators
or can't find parking spots
floating in to claim this woman, a wife, a mother
as her son walks quickly down the hall towards her room, dreading the inevitable.
In those last moments she manages to sit up,
looking around the room for a familiar face.
She is surrounded by staff
and of course Death
who has whisked past them all and is holding out his hand invitingly
and so she takes ahold of it.
As her son arrives in the doorway
 she exhales her last breath
their eyes do not meet
she is already gone
and he is broken.
A little boy once more
suddenly alone in the world
standing there in his business suit and tie
looking so small and lost and alone.
He sobs for his mom and calls out her name
but there is only silence in return.

Oh my goodness.. this gave me chills. You have almost described the situation of my husband and his Mother. He was devastated to not have been the one holding her hand, the one she would see last. Sad.

Thank you Jen. :)
What struck me most Jo was her son's grief. It was just so palpable and it resonated inside me.
I think that no matter how old we get, we always need our moms - even when they have reached a point where they need us to take care of them, there will always be a small child in us that needs the love and nurturing that only she can give.

I think this is more so with boys. Boys (no matter how big), NEED their Moms. They are Mama's boys. My hubby loved his Mama more than anything on this earth... It crushed him.
